Network issues/lag/etc. | Thu Dec 29 18:42:27 2011 MST |
| So the more active of us have noticed some poopyness in network connectivity over the last couple of months (read: lag).
I've done some shopping around, and because of the great deal I got on this server, it'd about double up on hosting costs for me to move the server to another provider. We could go virtual, but I think that's kinda silly since I use the server for other things as well. Before I look harder, or start asking other mudders if they have a quality DC they could host it in, I'm going to do a little more waiting. Here are my last two bits of info from the host.
######## Dear Valued Client, This notification is being sent to inform you that a maintenance window will take place from 11:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on January 1, 2012 to 2:00 a.m. MST on January 2. The purpose of this maintenance is to bring additional circuits from some carriers within our facility into our bandwidth blend. This should result in increased capacity and added redundancy to each of our existing carriers. Please note that this maintenance should not affect your services. However if you notice any problems during the maintenance window please feel free to contact our NOC staff at any time. Thank you.

Dear Josh, Thank you very much for your continued business. In an ongoing effort to improve the quality of our services and our infrastructure, we will be adding additional network equipment to each of our server cabinets starting on January 10th, 2012. In order to facilitate the installation of this new networking equipment, some servers will be required to be relocated to other cabinets in our facility. The installation of this equipment will allow us to significant improve the quality of our network infrastructure and improve the overall experience for all of our customers. We are contacting you today because your leased server with us will be one of the devices that will be affected by this maintenance. We will need to take your server offline for a short time to relocate it to a new rack space so that we may complete the addition of this new networking gear. We anticipate that the total downtime for these moves should be no more than 15 minutes per server. Our staff will be available 24/7 to assist with these relocations, and we can perform this move at any time that is most convenient for you to minimize any impact on your operations. Please reply back to this email letting us know when the most convenient time would be to take your server offline to complete this move. We would request that you provide us with a minimum of 12 hours advance notice in order for us to prepare the transition and make it go as smoothly as possible. You will not need to make any changes to your server's configuration. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter. We are confident that the changes we are making will significantly improve our network performance, and we look forward to providing you with ever-improving service and support going forward. If you have any questions related to this maintenance or any other questions or concerns, please do not hestiate to contact us at any time. Thank you for your time and have a nice day,
########
I'm going to do some math and figure out a time near reboot for them to do this, and I'll post a follow up once I've requested teh time with them. |

When I do post this, you may even want to plan on not playing that day. I'm probably going to try to squeeze in some networking config changes and a kernel update when they move teh server. If I fuck up it will result in more downtime than 15 minutes |

we're on better network equipment, and they made some improvements to how many providers come into the part of thenetwork the server is in e.g. more routers to pick from |
